I'm always on the lookout for characters like this where the eyes are hidden, it means you get to finish a whole drawing but without the hassle of drawing eyes 😆. This is Jutis, one of a gang of Robbers from the animated series Ronja.
In this tutorial we employ cel shading and also use grey over the top of colours to add subtle shades.
For this tutorial you'll need 3 shades of grey for the helmet, 2 pale skin tones (1 dark 1 light), a yellow for the hair and an orange for the clothing.
Materials:
- Spectrum Noir Premium Marker Pad
- Spectra Marker Cool Grey 40% 026
- Spectra Marker Cool Grey 60% 028
- Spectra Marker Cool Grey 80% 030
- Spectrum Noir Illustrator Sandstone GB1
- Spectrum Noir Illustrator Maple GB3
- Spectrum Noir Illustrator Light Yellow LY1
- Spectrum Noir Illustrator Mango B02
- Sakura Pigma Micron 05
- Sakura Pigma Micron 01
- Pencil
- Eraser
My top tip is to really focus on the shape of the helmet when pencilling in your guidelines, the curves in there are very subtle. As soon as you get that right the rest will all fall into place.
