Inspired by Artistic Dyslexia, this tutorial is all about drawing a big old wrinkly face with bold shapes and chunky lines. We’ll skip the usual black outline and use a darker colour instead, with plenty of cutting in to sharpen everything up.
In this tutorial we’re drawing one of the creepy Harpies from Ronia. It’s a more human-looking face than we usually tackle, with bold makeup, oversized eyes and sweeping hair that gives us plenty of opportunity to play with colour and cutting in.
In this tutorial we’re drawing one of the weird Grey Dwarfs from Ronia. It’s a scruffy, feathery creature with a skull-like face, and a great one for building a character quickly from simple shapes and layers of colour.
In this tutorial we’re drawing the sandworm from Beetlejuice in my own style. There’s plenty going on with the two mouths, striped body and big eyes, making this a good one for playing with colour, highlights and shadows.
This tutorial is all about drawing a worm hiding under a little ghost costume. It’s a good one for practising light and shade on a twisting shape, using three tones to make the worm curl forwards and backwards.
Inspired by Elise Gravel, this tutorial is all about having a go at blending Posca pens without water or paintbrushes. We’ll draw a simple fox character and use the ears, nose and tail to practise blending from dark colours into lighter ones.
This tutorial turns an ice cream into something a little more gruesome, with a big swirl of intestine-style ice cream sitting on top. We’ll also upgrade the waffle cone texture by using three different tones to give it more depth.
This tutorial takes a classic ice cream cone and swaps the ice cream for a big swirly worm. We’ll use a simple shape to build the swirl, then add some shading and my favourite waffle texture to finish the cone.
Stumpy is one of those characters I keep coming back to, and this tutorial goes right back to the original idea. He’s a really simple character to build, using a limited palette and a few furry details to bring everything together.
This tutorial is all about creating a cheeky little dog-cat character using just reds and pinks. We’ll layer a couple of simple colour combinations to give it some shape, then finish it with chunky outlines, fur and big reflections.
This tutorial starts with a simple clownfish and then gets a little weird. We’ll add some simple shading and chunky stripes before finishing it with the exploding drips that came from a happy accident in one of my workshops.
This tutorial starts with a simple heart shape and turns it into a weird little face with big eyes and plenty of wonky teeth. We’ll also add some extra volume to the hair and build the nose and neck in afterwards.
