In this tutorial, we’re drawing a wonky Daruma doll using Posca pens, bold black lines, and a bit of gold to make it pop.
This one is great for playing with shape, red tones, loose brush pen details, and messy little gold patterns.
Materials
- Art Gecko freestyle sketchbook
- Posca PC-5M Coral Pink
- Posca PC-5M Red
- Posca PC-5M Ruby Red
- Posca PC-5M Apricot
- Posca PC-5M Gold
- Posca PC-1MR Gold
- Posca PC-5BR Black Brush Pen
Notes:
If you don’t have the brush pen, use a black Posca PC-3M and double up your lines where you want them thicker. Keep shaking your metallic pens so the gold stays metallic.

Take It Further
Once you’ve finished one Daruma doll, don’t leave it there. Try one of these:
- Change the gold details
Add your own patterns, shapes, symbols, or even your name instead of copying mine exactly. - Play with the face
Make the eyebrows bigger, messier, curlier, or add extra bags, spots, quote marks, or moustache hairs. - Use it as a goal doll
Leave one eye blank until you start working towards a goal, then add the second pupil when you complete it.
Don’t overthink it. Take a few risks, throw some shapes in, and see what happens. Post your finished Daruma doll in the community when you’ve had a go.
